My research topic
My research topic revolves around law and society. The question being asked is whether or not the process of incorporating a law can be a detriment for society in general? For example, the process governments have to go through to pass a new law takes so long that it is no longer relevant to continue. For this, I plan to experience first hand what the practice of law entitles. Learning basic law and gathering experience on how one uses said laws in order to win a case. Specifically working with a business law firm called Gowling, their experience with Quebec law will help me answer my hypothesis. Although not working with the creation of laws directly, their knowledge and experience will lead me on the right path to figuring out the answers to my question.
In comparison, one can follow and internship close to government procedures. By working with the provincial or federal government, one can observe how laws are formulated and the scrutiny that goes into creating a new law. However, depending on which political party said person is working with, their will most certainly be a political bias regarding the party's political view. For this reason, I chose a law firm because they use the laws created by government. I am not saying there is no bias in law firm, but seeing as how they do not write the laws, their opinions are not heavily biased and based on political views. On the other hand, a person could work within the public sector and feel first hand the impact of newly created laws. Yet, this is too broad of a field to intern in and may not obtain the necessary information required to write a document on the topic.
For one, my studies in are under the profile Science humaine: Droit et individu. My classes revolve around humanities with ties to the economy and psychology. This topic allows me to observe law, sociology and even economics. Depending on the type of law, the internship and topic revolves around at least the aforementioned 3 fields of study. In regards to the field of law, the link is quite obvious considering I will intern in a law firm. When it comes to sociology, I will be looking at the effects and the length it takes for laws to be introduced in societies. Finally, the economics will revolve around the fact that the firm works with companies and/or industries, and will look at the effects of new laws on such law firms.
In the end, it will be the contacts I obtain in the field that will lead me to the answers of my topic. By conducting small interviews and learning from their practice, my work with these professionals will give me new insight into the world of laws and how new ones effect the world around it.
